SOL D’ORO 2023 - ITALY DOMINATES ALL CATEGORIES
The diplomas will be presented on Sunday 2 April during the Sol&Agrifood Show
Verona, 27 February 2023 - The 21st edition of the Sol d'Oro competition at Veronafiere once again fleW the Italian flag. The most selective competition in the world specifically for extra virgin olive oil saw Italian producers won 20 of the 21 medals envisaged in the seven competition categories: Light fruity, Medium fruity, Intense fruity, PDO-PGI, Organic, Single Variety and Absolute Beginners.
This success story was spread all across the main producing regions: five in Apulia, three in Latium, two in Abruzzo, Tuscany and Umbria, one in Sardinia, Sicily, Veneto, Campania, Sardinia and Trentino. Croatia took the other medal. The "Sol d'Oro Challenge 2023" for the best overall performance went to Azienda Agricla Donato Conserva from Modugno (Bari).
The 2023 edition of Sol d'Oro (20-26 February at Veronafiere) attracted 409 samples from Albania, Chile, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Peru, Portugal and Spain. After the initial tasting phase curated by AIPO Verona, the finalist olive oils were analysed during blind tastings by the international jury coordinated by Marino Giorgetti (Panel Leader) with Milena Bucar Miklavcic (Slovenia), Anunciacion Carpio (Spain), Simone De Nicola (Italy), Yara El Ghalayini (Jordan), Giuseppe Giordano (Italy), Selin Ertur (Turkey), Madhi Fendri (Tunisia), Ernest Kante (Slovenia), Alberto Morreale (Italy), Carlotta Pasetto (Italy), Roberta Ruggeri (Italy), Giulio Scatolini (Italy), Piergiorgio Sedda (Italy), Na Xie (China), Miciyo Yamada (Japan) and Antonio Volani (Italy).
The official award presentation ceremony for the International Sol d'Oro 2023 Competition to consign the Sol d'Oro, Sol d'Argento, Sol di Bronzo and Special Mention diplomas for the finalists will be held on Sunday 2 April 2023 within the scope of Sol&Agrifood, the International Exhibition of Quality Agro-foods (Veronafiere, 2-5 April, www.solagrifood.it), when all the award-winning olive oils will be the protagonists of guided tastings. The presentation of the Sol d'Oro, Sol d'Argento and Sol di Bronzo awards will be the main event during the Evo Gala Dinner on Tuesday 4 April at Palazzo della Gran Guardia, Verona.
“This year, 'Sol d'Oro'," said Maurizio Danese, Managing Director of Veronafiere, "set a new record for samples and countries taking part, positioning itself firmly at the very top of international rankings among the best-attended competitions. Sol d'Oro - historically the most selective olive oil event implementing the strictest assessment formula - was delighted with the new collaboration with AIPO and the Aipo d'Argento award which, thanks to its analysis laboratory approved by the Ministry (MASAF), ensured yet another further leap forward for the status of this competition. The excellence and expertise of the 17 members of the international tasting panel - from 8 countries - was also confirmed. And one month from now, buyers attending Sol&Agrifood will be able to taste the Evo oils that won medals and special mentions during specific tasting sessions. Italy once again clearly stated its leadership in terms of production quality and variety, as well as a capacity for pairings with almost every cuisine in the world.”
“We are delighted with the results for this XXI edition of 'Sol d'Oro', confirming the status of the competition as an opportunity for comparison," said Marino Giorgetti, leader of the Sol d'Oro Panel since its very first edition. "The tastings were carried out in absolute compliance with our extremely selective standards: blind tasting, bottles rendered anonymous by a notary public and individual tasting booths. These excellent results were also achieved thanks to the commitment of Veronafiere, the expertise of the international jury and collaboration with AIPO and the AIPO d'Argento competition. The success achieved by Italy was extraordinary," Giorgetti summed up. "Despite the difficulties experienced by our olive growers faced by prohibitive climatic conditions, it was rather surprising to see that Spain took no awards, since the country is usually and always a protagonist in Verona - yet climate issues also hit the Iberian peninsula very hard.”
